Oberleutnant Lent

recieved his..Knight's Cross on August .30th.1941,

when his score stood at .8 day and 11 night victories.

 

 

On October 5 th 1944 , the German Night Fighter arm suffered a heavy blow .

Oberst Helmut Lent , Kommodore of .NJG 3 , and a wearer of the Diamonds , crashed at Paderborn while attempting to land his JU 88 C-6 . Lent was seriously injured and died on October 7th. .Killed with him were his radar operator Kubisch , Oberleutnant Kloss and war correspondent Leutnant Kark .

Lents funeral provided evidence of his standing in the german military community . Paratroops carry his casket , which is escorted by officers all wearing the Knight's Cross .

death marked the end of a chapter in the history of air warfare.
