Kittel The second most sucessful Geschwader in Russia was JG.54,and the top-scorer of the unit was Otto Kittel. A slow starter, he had raised his score to 120 by late 1943, after over two years at the front. Like Hartmann he was shot down twice in combat and once escaped after being a prisoner for two weeks. Otto Kittel was killed in combat on the 14th of February 1945 after gaining at least 267 victories, all gained in the East.
