At the start of World War Two, Adolf Galland flew in Poland in the Henschel Hs 123 untill October 1, 1939 preforming at least fifty ground attack missions. For this Galland was awarded the Iron Cross. Next Galland was assigned to JG 27 at Krefeld to fly BF 109s commanded by Max Ibel. During the French Campaign Adolf Galland scored his first kills on 12 May, 1940 in which he shot down three Hurricans in one day. Between 12 May and 9 June his score rose to twelve.
